Using Online Learning Environments: Using Moodle (this one is a free resource)
How does Brandon use Moodle in his classes?
(Brandon Hershey is an English 10 teacher who actively uses Moddle in his classes.)
-Discussion Forum: (extending past the period)
-Online Quizzes
-Posting resources or links that are used in the classroom (vocab lists, glossary of terms
-Post assignments
-Digital dropbox (universal place where students can post work to continue working on outside of the school--at home)
-Introduce new lessons.... develop a Scavenger Hunt
-Wiki space (Moodle keeps users in a secure environment with the use of a classroom 'key' that limits who is seeing the wiki)
POSITIVES for use of Moodle
-self-guided/paced for the student
-gives the student the responsibilities for information
-appeals to this generation of students
-24/7 availability to the students
CONCERNS for use of Moodle
-lack of access for Internet access by some students outside of school
-teachers need to set a timeline that gives students extra time to get alternate access (need to work with your school to increase access outside of the school day)
-increase in cheating???? (If a teacher uses the quiz feature, how does the teacher know who took the test if it is not required to be taken during class time? Perhaps teachers need to design tests to incorporate collaboration rather than the traditional testing methods... balance)
